SCUBA stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. As a SCUBA diver, you carry your air supply in a high-pressure tank, allowing you to explore underwater without any air supply lines to the surface.

Do I really need to take diving lessons or can I learn by reading a book?

How good a swimmer must I be to take diving lessons?
You don’t need to be an Olympic swimmer, but it’s essential to be comfortable in water over your head. Treading water and having confidence in your ability to stay afloat are necessary, as well as being relaxed when your head is underwater and being able to swim approximately 150 meters.
How long is a basic certification course?
The length of our open water courses varies based on individual needs. The minimum requirement is 20 hours of formal instruction, including both lecture and water sessions, all supervised by a certified instructor.
What's the basic training like?
Basic training covers theory, pool work, and open water diving. You’ll learn about pressure, diving equipment, clearing your mask, and other essential skills. Classroom learning is followed by practical sessions in a pool or sheltered shallow water, culminating in ‘real’ dives in the sea.

Our diving training is affiliated with PADI, NAUI, SDI, and TDI, providing you with the best and most recognized certifications necessary for diving anywhere in the world.
I'm going somewhere warm, is it worth me taking a course before I go?
It’s a good idea to do the theory work and training beforehand in Lebanon, so you can fully enjoy your vacation without spending it in a classroom.
Do I need to buy all of my equipment before I take lessons?
For certification courses, you only need to have fins, a mask, and a snorkel. Abyss provides these items and other major equipment like tanks, regulators, and buoyancy compensators as part of the course.
Do I need to buy all of my equipment to go diving?
While it’s recommended to have your own equipment for comfort and confidence, you can rent all or part of the diving gear at Abyss, ensuring you have perfectly maintained equipment.
How much does it cost to buy a complete diving system?
Diving equipment varies in price based on its quality and functions. It’s a good decision to buy the best you can afford for the best diving experience.
Do I need a diving certification card?
Yes, you’ll need to produce proof of certification for air station fills, renting equipment, and purchasing diving services. It’s a common-sense rule to maintain safety in the sport.
I can't see without my glasses, can I dive?
Prescription lenses can be added to your mask, or you can wear contact lenses while diving. Various options are available to ensure you have a clear vision underwater.
I suffer from a medical condition, can I dive?
Some medical conditions may not preclude you from diving, but it’s essential to consult a doctor specialized in diving medicine. Medical referees can provide a certificate that states your fitness for diving.
I have a disability, can I dive?
Disabilities can often be overcome, and as long as you have written consent from your doctor, you can take up diving.
